Andy Burnham Sworn In

22 Jun 2026

Andy Burnham has officially launched his campaign to become the next Prime Minister following Keir Starmer's resignation, placing the former Greater Manchester Mayor firmly at the centre of British politics.

Burnham confirmed his intention to stand in the Labour leadership contest on Monday, just hours after Starmer announced he would step down as Prime Minister and Labour leader.

The newly elected MP for Makerfield is widely regarded as the overwhelming favorite to succeed Starmer and could take office as early as next month if no serious challenger emerges.

Speaking after arriving in Westminster, Burnham called for stability and unity within Labour while refusing to be drawn into speculation about a possible General Election. When asked whether he would seek a fresh public mandate if he became Prime Minister, Burnham replied that such discussions were "jumping several hurdles ahead".

The leadership bid has already received a major boost after former Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced he would not stand and instead backed Burnham's campaign.

The endorsement is seen as a significant moment in the race and strengthens Burnham's position as the frontrunner to take over from Starmer.

Burnham was sworn in as an MP earlier today following his recent by-election victory, a move that many political observers believe was designed to pave the way for a return to frontline national politics. His reputation as a champion of regional investment and public transport reform has earned him strong support across northern England, where he became known as the "King of the North".

Labour leadership nominations are expected to open on 9 July.

Party officials are understood to be considering whether a full leadership contest will be required or whether Burnham could secure enough support to be installed without opposition.

If a contest takes place, a new leader is expected to be confirmed before Parliament returns in September.

For now, Burnham's focus remains on convincing Labour members, MPs and trade unions that he is the person best placed to restore confidence in the government and lead the party into the next General Election. With support building rapidly across the party, many now see his path to Downing Street as increasingly clear.
