Climate Change Could Bring Great Whites to UK Seas

05 Aug 2026

With climate change heating up the seas, sharks are starting to migrate towards the poles where temperatures are cooler.

UK waters are ideal for sharks. They're a suitable temperature of 12 - 24°C, and contain a bountiful number of grey seals, one of sharks’ favourite snacks.

Tom Hird, presenter of All The Sharks on Netflix, thinks if seas continue to warm, we could start seeing hammerheads, and reckons there’s a possibility great whites might already be here. On August 1st, a shark between 10 - 12ft was reportedly spotted off St Quen’s Bay in Jersey, although it has not been confirmed to be a great white.
